LESSON 1 | CHOOSE YOUR STYLE
In lesson one, we're going to talk about how to choose your style before we can get started drawing motifs for your patterns. We need to know what you're going to make and what you want your style to be!
That way, when you've created 5 to 10 patterns, they all look cohesive and they can go in a collection together.
There’s a range of styles consistently seen in the marketplace. We want to identify which style feels the most like you and your audience!
Do you resonate with any of these styles?
Modern
Taditional
Global Eclectic Boho (Bohemian)
Transitional or Casual
Glam
LESSON 2 | RESEARCH YOUR REFERENCES
Lesson two is ALL about researching reference images.
Reference images are great because they can give you a starting place for drawing your motifs. You’ll want to DIG DEEP into your style and build a moodboard of inspiration. BUT before you can build a moodboard you’ll need to do a big of research. Create a list of websites that inspire you.
Some of my go-to’s (that you can use too) are:
Once you develop your list, write down the common characteristics that you see. Continue to narrow down your findings and create sub-folders whether it’s on your computer or through Pinterest.
LESSON 3 | IDENTIFY YOUR MEDIUM
Lesson three is all about identifying your medium.
You’ll want to think about the style you want to portray when drawing your motifs, and oftentimes that will guide you towards the right medium. When you’re starting out, play around with different types of medium so you can see which works best for you.
Think of the aesthetic you like the best as the end result and sometimes the medium you’re using is going to inform that. It’s totally OK for you to switch around mediums too until you find the one that works best for you!
